Synopsis

Black is typically the most common colour found in Malay manuscripts. Before inks became a commodity for sale in art stores, writers had to make their own black inks from materials, such as soot from oil lamps and burnt plant matter, sourced from their environment. This programme invites participants to get back to the basics of black, and to try their hand at replicating a historical black ink recipe based on the team’s research into the significance of natural colours in the history of maritime Southeast Asia.

Participants will also enjoy an exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour of RJ Paper, gaining unique insights into their processes for storing and distributing eco-friendly paper across the local and regional markets.
